What is The King’s Award for Voluntary Service?

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise their outstanding work and contribution to their local community. The award was originally created over a decade ago for His Majesty to mark the Golden Jubilee in 2002 and to recognise the outstanding contributions made to local communities by groups of volunteers. The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is equivalent to an MBE for volunteer groups.

Each King’s Award for Voluntary Service winning organisation receives a certificate signed by The King together with an exclusive commemorative crystal award presented at a special awards ceremony.

Who is Eligible to Win the King’s Award for Voluntary Service?

To be eligible to win the King’s Award for Voluntary Service the organisation must meet several criteria, which include:

    • The group must consist of two or more individuals and must provide a specific benefit to the local community. The group can be a branch of or associated with a larger regional or national organisation, however, the volunteers must have started and developed the initiative for the activity locally.
    • The group must have been operating for 3 years and at a high standard.
    • Half of the individuals who make up the group must be volunteers.
    • More than half of the group’s volunteers must have the right to reside in the UK.
    • The group must meet requirements around child and adult safeguarding, if appropriate.

How to Nominate a Group for the King’s Award for Voluntary Service?

Anyone can nominate a group for the King’s Award for Voluntary Service; this can include anyone who benefits from the group’s activities. However, you may not nominate a group you are involved in, whether as a paid member of staff or a volunteer.

As well as a nomination, supporting letters from two independent people are also required. The letter must show the impact the group has had on the local community, what the volunteers in the group do and why they are so special, and the relationship between the supporter of the group making the nomination, as well as the reason for their endorsement of the nomination.

Overall, the judges of the award are looking for letters that bring the work and impact of the group to life.
